Wool Harvesting
Agriculture ITO industry training is designed to equip people of all levels of experience who are employed in the wool harvesting industry (shearing, wool handling and wool pressing) with the knowledge and skills they need to enhance productivity and profitability; improve health and safety in the workplace; and increase employee job satisfaction and staff retention.
Whether you're new to the wool harvesting industry, already have some experience, or are currently in, or progressing towards, a supervisory or management role, Agriculture ITO offers a nationally recognised qualifications to suit you. Training is developed in consultation with Meat & Wool New Zealand and the wool harvesting industry, and delivered by Tectra, our preferred training provider.

National Certificate in Wool Harvesting with strands in Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool, Machine Shearing Fine Wool, Blade Shearing, and Wool Handling (Level 2)
Key Topics
Depending on the strand selected, learn about wool pressing, woolshed work practices, health and safety, teamwork, employee responsibilities, injury management, and nutritional requirements for work.

People new to the wool harvesting industry.
National Certificate in Shearing (Blade Shearing) (Level 3)
Key Topics
Learn how to adjust style to maintain the required output, fluency and quality, and build on rhythm and timing to improve your average shearing rate. Knowledge and skills required to prepare and sharpen shearing blades to maintain the required shearing output will be gained.

19 months

People who can blade shear at an intermediate level.
National Certificate in Shearing (Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool) (Level 3)
Key Topics
Learn how to make accurate judgement on the best gear for sheep conditions, adjust style to maintain the required output, fluency and quality and build on rhythm and timing to improve your average shearing rate. Knowledge and skills relating to preparing, maintaining and servicing shearing gear, a shearing handpiece and shearing plant will be gained.

People who can machine shear crossbred sheep at an intermediate level.
National Certificate in Shearing (Machine Shearing Fine Wool) (Level 3)

National Certificate in Shearing (Blade Shearing) (Level 4)

Knowledge and skills relating to requiring conduct gear experting to maintain the required shearing output will be gained.

National Certificate in Shearing (Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool) (Level 4)
Key Topics

Knowledge and skills relating to tailor comb selection to sheep condition, diagnose and correct the most common faults in machinery and handpieces, and undertake gear experting will be gained..

National Certificate in Wool Handling (Level 3) with an optional strand in Grading Wool (Level 4)
Key Topics
Learn how to operate within a woolshed, prepare and grade the wool clip at the board, have knowledge of wool clip preparation and the sale of the wool process.
Duration
1 year and 1 year for the optional strand
Who should attend?
For people with some experience handling wool and wishing to gain more skills operating within the woolshed and wool preparation.
