What is industry training? |
Industry training is a great way to up-skill your staff while they're at work, introduce new skills to your workplace and ultimately boost your business performance.
It's the smart way to get ahead - and it's simple. Your trainees learn practical skills from you (or another on-job trainer) , and get extra theory-based training off the job from contracted training providers. Their work is marked by assessors, and every success counts towards their qualification - bringing more skills and more credibility to your business.
Of course all this time you continue to have them on your team, contributing to the bottom line.

How much time off work is needed? |
The great thing about an Agriculture ITO course is that some of it could happen at your place, where your trainee learns important skills and gains valuable knowledge in their day-to-day work.
That means they continue to contribute to your business while they're learning, and you continue to benefit from having someone there to help you do the work. The practical work is also assessed by a registered assessor (usually the farmer-trainer or employer).
Of course there are some things trainees can't learn through hands-on work, and that's where the theory-based training comes in. This happens off the job through specially contracted training providers or distance learning services - all officially recognised and registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). It's arranged by the Agriculture ITO Training/Industry Adviser. |
|
 |
|
There's no set timeframe for getting an Agriculture ITO qualification, although of course the faster your trainee learns, the sooner they will finish.
The important thing is that trainees are disciplined and set aside some regular study time - and of course their Training/Industry Adviser is there for help and support when they need it. They also keep an eye on progress, so trainees don't get behind in their learning. |

 |
|
As an employer, you play an important role in giving trainees practical training, showing them how to do the job and providing moral support - you can make a big difference by inspiring them to succeed, especially if you take on the role of On-job trainer (a registered assessor). There are also other people around to help: |
- Agriculture ITO Training/Industry Advisers let trainees know what they need to do to get their qualification, arrange and organise local training courses and collect results
- the tutor who takes the theory study course will offer expert advice and help.
|
Your Agriculture ITO Training/Industry Adviser will work with you to ensure you and your employee have everything you need - and they're always a phone call away if you need help or advice. |
|
 |
|
To study with Agriculture ITO, people need to be already employed in the agriculture industry and have a formal employment agreement (and be paying tax and ACC levies).
That means they can be: |
- working on a farm, or
- 'servicing' agriculture - for example, working in wool harvesting (shearing and wool handling), rural servicing (including retail and livestock), artificial insemination and agrichemical distribution.
|
They will also need to sign a formal training agreement with you before they start.
Of course as an employer you can also study with Agriculture ITO. However, it's important to note that you won't qualify for the government subsidy on fees - you pay the full costs of your course. |

Choosing the right qualification? |
New Zealand's agriculture industry offers a huge variety of job opportunities - and Agriculture ITO has the qualifications to suit! So whatever your employee is thinking of studying for, chances are they'll find it with us.
What's more, every qualification has been developed by industry, for industry, so your employee gets the latest and the most relevant training for their job. And they learn from the best - all our trainers are recognised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
Here's where you'll find information on every one of Agriculture ITO's qualifications - it's a great place to see just what we teach, and what your employee will learn. |

How much does training cost? |
Agriculture ITO fees are very affordable, especially when you compare them with the fees of other tertiary education providers like universities. What's more, they're subsidised by the government and the industry - so trainees get a discount of up to 85% of the total cost. (Note this discount doesn't apply to employers studying for Agriculture ITO qualifications.)
You pay the fees for every year that you enrol for theory training courses. They cover practically all your costs, including: |
- registering with NZQA
- all NZQA fees
- your theory training with an NZQA-registered training provider
- all your training materials
- your certificate
- ongoing support from an Agriculture ITO Training/Industry Adviser
|
If a trainee's costs are higher than normal because they have to travel a long way to attend theory courses, they may qualify for a travel subsidy. For more information on this and our fees, please contact us or your local Agriculture ITO Training/Industry Adviser. You can do that by clicking here. |
