School-leavers find hands-on experience Just the Job
Filming was completed recently for Agriculture ITO's three slots in an upcoming TV series called Just The Job.
Auckland-based film company Dave Mason Productions is making the 10-episode series, which puts senior school students in a working environment for two days, under the guidance of an industry training organisation.
Orewa High School student Michael Bolton spent two days on the farms operated by the Tiroa E and Te Hape B Trust, east of Te Kuiti.
Michael, who has experienced farm work through family friends, dagged his first sheep and rode a horse for the first time for the cameras.
"I'm a hands-on learner," Michael said. "You can only give it a go."
Michael was supervised by mentor-for-the-day Wayne Fraser, and also spoke with Modern Apprentice Brett Young about how the apprenticeship programme can help achieve training goals.
The hardest thing about the shoot, he said, was doing interviews "with that camera right in your face."
Agriculture ITO training adviser Rose Anderson, who liased between the trust and the production company, said Michael would have a great future in the industry. For his part, Michael said he would definitely be putting Agriculture ITO training in his farming career plans.
Just The Job is expected to air in September or October this year. Each half-hour episode will comprise three segments, and Agriculture ITO chief executive Kevin Bryant said the programmes were a good opportunity to give a wide audience a taste of careers in these industries.
"The programme will be going out to prime-time audiences on TV2. This is a great chance to show mainstream New Zealand what opportunities there are in agriculture and how we support people new to the industry to develop their careers."
